Judge Gerry Cooper is a lifelong resident of the City of Garland and a 1971 graduate of Garland High School. He received two degrees from Southern Methodist University, a Bachelor of Business Administration from the Cox School of Business and his Juris Doctor degree from the SMU Dedman School of Law. He served as Magister of Phi Delta Phi Chapter at SMU in his third year of law school.
Judge Cooper worked at the law firm of Kelsoe, Anderson, Khoury & Clark after graduating from law school. In 1998, he opened his own law firm on Main Street in Downtown Garland. In 2002, he was elected to the office of Justice of the Peace, Precinct 2, Place 1.
He is a member of the Texas Bar Association and Garland Bar Association. Some of his community activities are Garland Rotary Club, Garland Chamber of Commerce, Garland YMCA and First Christian Church, Garland where he is a lifetime member and served as Chairman of the Board in 1996 and 2013, and where he has also served as Deacon, Elder, and Trustee.

Judge Cooper is co-author along with three other attorneys and presenter of "Evictions and Landlord/Tenant Law in Texas," published by NBI, Inc. in October 2001 and presented as a Continuing Legal Education seminar.
Some of his hobbies are reading and jogging. Since 1997 he has finished seven White Rock Marathons and 60 half-marathons. He also loves spending time with his grandchildren.
Judge Cooper and his wife Brenda have three daughters, Kate, Cara and Kristen and three grandchildren, Addy, Cooper and Charlotte.
