Statement of support for Mayors National Climate Action Agenda Letter

On June 1st a letter protesting President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw the U.S. from the historic Paris Agreement on climate change was published. It started out with signatures of 61 mayors but has grown to 298 mayors. They join the dozens of state and local officials who have vowed to lead where the President refuses to.

In the letter, the mayors promised to meet commitments agreed to under the international accord, namely cutting carbon emissions in an effort to ward off the worst effects of global climate change. The letter concluded “The world cannot wait — and neither will we.”

I applaud this stand by the nation’s mayors and encourage us all to do what we can to achieve the goals of the Paris Climate Accord. We can change lightbulbs to LEDs, pay attention to ozone alert days and carpool or ride DART, shut off automatic sprinklers when it rains, and, recycle. We are not big industry but every bit helps.

Climate change and pollution know no boundaries and do not discriminate. We MUST all take steps, however seemingly small, to curb the rise in global temperatures so that we may all have a planet that will sustain our very being.

Dallas County Votes to Expand Accessibility,
Availability of Voting Options

On September 20, 2016, the Dallas County Commissioners Court voted 4-1

to approve the Elections Department plan that expands the locations

and times of voting options to the residents of Dallas County.

In addition to the 25 permanent and established early voting locations, each Dallas County Commissioner’s district will have an additional 2 temporary locations. Because Pleasant Grove has traditionally been an underserved community, it will get 1 more for a total of 3 temporary early voting locations and a grand total of 7 places to vote early in District 1.

There is more accessibility for younger voters through mobile voting centers that will be on a rotating two-day schedule at each of the seven main Dallas County Community College District campuses. This gives the opportunity for students and faculty to vote without missing classes or arranging transportation to off-site locations.

And lastly, each early voting location will have expanded hours the first week of voting.

BOTH weeks of early voting will be from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Now people who have jobs, family responsibilities, and other obligations, can get to the polls.
