Garland NAACP

On August 19th the Garland NAACP hosted a community meeting to discuss the recent uprising in Ferguson, MO with a panel of experts and activists focused on keeping Garland’s young men and women safe.  The meeting was attended by many community activists, NAACP members, churches, local and county officials.

Pictured are: Garland NAACP President Ricky McNeal, Commissioner Theresa Daniel, Alex Batiste, Chief of Police Mitch Bates, Dale H. Long, GISD Superintendent Dr. Bob Morrison, Reverend Ronald Session-Shiloh Church, GISD School Board Trustee Linda Griffin,  and City Councilmen B.J. Williams

Commissioner Daniel and Commissioner Cantrell joined Garland Mayor Athas and councilmembers to celebrate the opening of the new frontage road along Interstate 635 East on August 6.

The $10 million highway project consists of restructuring the Centerville exit ramp, and the addition of a service road. The Texas Department of Transportation project represents a small portion of a larger project being developed to reconstruct and reconfigure I-635 East from U.S. Highway 75 to Interstate 30. The Interstate 635 East project is expected to increase economic development and improve traffic flow in the area.

DCHHS Offers Free Flu Vaccines

Dallas County Health and Human Services is offering the seasonal flu vaccine for children and adults. The adult flu vaccine is free for all uninsured and low income Dallas County adult residents and individuals covered by Medicare. The vaccine is also free for children who are eligible for Texas Vaccines for Children (TVFC).

This year’s flu vaccine is an all-in-one inoculation that offers protection against multiple flu strains including the H1N1 virus. DCHHS also has the Flu Mist available for children 2-18 years of age. It is quadrivalent, meaning it protects against four strains of the flu virus.
Officials don’t anticipate this season to be much different from last flu season, but that doesn’t change the importance of getting vaccinated.
“There were two influenza-associated pediatric deaths in Dallas County in 2013,” said Director Zachary Thompson.

The flu vaccine is recommended for almost everyone except children younger than 6 months and people who have severe allergies to eggs. The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention recommend the flu vaccine as the best means of flu prevention.

It takes the body about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop and provide protection against the flu virus infection. Dallas County residents are urged to come get their flu vaccine now.
“I encourage everyone to get a flu shot now so that you are protected this flu season,” said Dr. Christopher Perkins, DCHHS medical director and health authority.

The adult flu vaccine is offered in the adult immunization clinic on the first floor at the DCHHS Building, 2377 North Stemmons Freeway in Dallas. Clinic hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday – Friday. Appointments aren’t necessary. The children’s flu vaccine is available at all DCHHS immunization clinics. For more information call 214-819-2163.

As part of National Small Business Week, Commissioner Daniel would like to take the opportunity to highlight the impact of outstanding entrepreneurs and small business owners. Every day, they’re working to grow small businesses, create 21st century jobs and drive innovation.Small business are vital to Dallas County's growth and success!
