Actual Innocence Exoneration Unit

The Actual Innocence Exoneration Unit (AIEU) is a resource for men and women convicted in a Dallas County court who have meritorious claims of actual innocence. Formally established in 2007, our efforts are concentrated on seeking or developing new evidence through case investigation. Newly discovered exculpatory evidence is used to litigate relief through habeas corpus writs. The AIEU uses various methods and tools in our investigations including trial record review, witness interviews, as well as privileged reviews of the prosecutors’ case files. Many cases reviewed by AIEU are decades old and many things can change and happen over those years that merit a new investigation. To successfully investigate our cases, the AIEU must have commitment and perseverance. For many of those whose cases we investigate, we are often their last hope for relief.
