Promotional Written Examination Announcement
SERGEANT

This announcement serves as notification of registration for the Sergeant Promotional Examination which will be administered in March 2016 (you will be notified of the exact date and time via email). In order to qualify and sit for the written examination, candidates must (1) complete an online application via Dallas County’s iRecruitment System, (2) meet the minimum qualifications at the time of registration, and (3) register at the following location only. Note: Candidates who do not complete an online application or register in person will not be eligible to take the written examination.

Sergeant Written Exam Announcement

Step 1. .All eligible employees must complete the online employment application via the iRecruitment system.
Step 2. Provide an original transcript(s) (if applicable) from all colleges/universities along other required documents (e.g., Exam Registration Form) when you register in person. (*Official college transcript(s) required)
Step 3. Provide proper identification when you register in person (i.e., Driver’s License, Dallas County ID badge).
(*) College degrees or college hours completed are only accepted from post-secondary educational institutions that have been accredited to grant degrees by one of the national or regional accrediting agencies in the United States, as recognized by the United States Department of Education. A certified transcript that is embossed with the institution’s raised seal must be provided as proof during the registration period; and

Education obtained outside the United States must be converted, at the candidate’s expense, to the equivalent United States educational level by a recognized accrediting agency or organization in the United States.

This notification serves as the announcement of the promotional examination process for the positions of Lieutenant, Captain and Commander. Prior to registring to sit for the written examinations, candidates must have met the minimum elibitility requirements listed below. Register at the following location only:

LIEUTENANT

The minimum requirements for the examination are as follows (all required work experience must be with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department):

Must have successfully maintained all State and Sheriff’s Department licensing/commissioning requirements and achieved one of the following:

  • Served at least two (2) years as a Deputy III and have at least sixty (60) hours of college from an accredited college or university with a grade “C” or better in each class, not the GPA (grade point average); OR
  • Served at least two (2) years as a Deputy III, two (2) years of continuous military service with an honorable discharge, and have thirty (30) hours of college from an accredited college or university with a grade “C” or better in each class, not the GPA (grade point average); OR
  • Served six (6) continuous years as a Deputy III.

CAPTAIN

The minimum requirements for the examination are as follows (all required work experience must be with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department):

Must have successfully maintained all State and Sheriff’s Department licensing/commissioning requirements and achieved one of the following:

  • Served at least two (2) years as a Deputy IV and have at least sixty (60) hours of college from an accredited college or university with a grade “C” or better in each class, not the GPA (grade point average); OR
  • Served at least two (2) years as a Deputy IV, two (2) years of continuous military service with an honorable discharge, and have thirty (30) hours of college from an accredited college or university with a grade “C” or better in each class, not the GPA (grade point average); OR
  • Served six (6) continuous years as a Deputy IV.

DETENTION SERVICE COMMANDER

The minimum requirements for the examination are as follows (all required work experience must be with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department):

Must have successfully maintained all State and Sheriff’s Department licensing/commissioning requirements and achieved one of the following:

  • Served at least two (2) years as a Detention Service Manager (DSM) and have at least sixty (60) hours of college from an accredited college or university with a grade “C” or better in each class; OR
  • Served at least two (2) years of continuous military service with an honorable discharge, and have at least thirty (30) hours of college from an accredited college or university with a grade “C” or better in each class, not the GPA (grade point average) and served at least two (2) years as a Detention Service Manager (DSM); OR
  • Served six (6) continuous years as a Detention Service Manager (DSM).

“Continuous employment” is defined as current employment in a TCOLE law enforcement position with no interruption/break in service. Prior to sitting for a promotional exam any probationary period must be completed, if applicable.
