Training Section:

The Dallas Sheriff’s Department Training Section is a licensed academy and is currently rated “**at risk” with the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement. The academy is housed at the:

Bill J. Priest Institute of El Centro College
1402 Corinth Street
Dallas, 75215

(214) 751-4580

The academy exists to provide the highest quality training possible for the law enforcement/detentions community, and for other employees of Dallas County. This training is in the areas of knowledge, skills, and attitude; and will be conducted in the basic training and in-service training modes. Our goal is to provide the citizens we serve with the best trained, most highly skilled, and ethical public servants possible.

As a secondary function the training section serves as the repository of training records for the department and its employees, and as the reporter of these to the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).

The Basic Peace Officer Course (BPOC) is offered as needed by the department, usually twice annually. This course is open to:

  • Our department’s cadets
  • Other Dallas County law enforcement agencies’ cadets (examples: Constables, District Attorney’s Office, and Parkland Hospital Police Department)
  • All other agencies’ cadets based on available seats (subject to tuition charge)

The Basic County Correction Course (BCCC) is offered as needed by the department, usually 8 – 10 times annually. This course is open to:

  • Our department’s cadets
  • All other agencies’ cadets based on available seats (subject to tuition charge)

In-service training is provided regularly which meets the training mandates set by TCOLE, and the training needs of our department, and the local law enforcement community.

A major component of the academy is the Kenneth J. “Mitch” Mitchum Firearms Training Center, located at 1508 Landgon Road in Southeast Dallas County. The Firearms Training Center consists of 13 acres, and includes the following facets:

  • Classroom
  • Defensive tactics building
  • 20 point, 50 yard pistol range
  • 5 point, 200 yard rifle range
  • Simmunitions house
  • Live fire house
  • Obstacle course

Each facet is open (when available) for reservation by outside agencies on an hourly rental basis. For availability and rental information contact (972) 225-4590.

** Please be advised the current training program sanctioned by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE), has been determined to be "at risk" for FY 2013, as provided in Commission Rule 215.13(a)(1).This is due to a statistical analysis of the pass rate of students who have taken the TCOLE licensing examination. The rule establishes the acceptable pass rate at 70% on the state test and the percentage of students that passed on 1st attempt for the three year evaluation period. Our program registered below the TCOLE rate in 2013 for the Basic Licensing FY 2011- FY 2013 evaluation period. We plan to keep a statistical update on the testing pass rate process throughout the next twelve months to inform students of the progress made.
