DALLAS COUNTY TO PROVIDE FUNDING FOR
To help encourage the designation and preservation of key aspects of Dallas County's history, the Dallas County Historical Commission will provide funding for up to two State-approved historical markers this Fall.
The Commission is providing this funding because there are many significant elements of the County's history that have not been acknowledged to the same degree as other areas (for instance, only about ten percent of the 374 markers in the County involve elements of Hispanic, Asian, and African-American history, and there are still several cities in the County without a State marker) and because it is thought that the cost of a State marker ($1000-$2000) may discourage many individuals and groups from pursuing such designation.

Under the County's new program, the County will provide one-half of the funding for the small version of the State's subject marker, cemetery marker, or Recorded Texas Historic Landmark marker if the marker deals with an aspect of Dallas County history that has previously been under-recognized.
Individuals and groups that are interested in receiving this funding will apply at the same time that they submit their application for a State marker to the Commission later this Fall. Dallas County Marker Funding Guidelines
REVIEWING STATE HISTORICAL MARKERS
The Dallas County Historical Commission serves as the first level of review for State historical markers. A marker application must be recommended for approval by the County's Historical Commission before it can be submitted to the Texas Historical Commission for consideration.
Marker applications can be submitted to the County to commemorate a historic site, neighborhood, structure, institution, church, cemetery, event or person. The State prescribes when marker applications can be submitted; they usually only can be submitted from September 1-November 15 of each year. The State typically sets the schedule around August.
