Mission & Purpose of the
Dallas County Fire Marshal’s Office
The Dallas County Fire Marshal’s Office is responsible for determining origin, cause, and circumstances of fires that occur in the unincorporated areas of Dallas County and the surrounding cities that request mutual aid service. The department has three arson and fire investigators who are sworn peace officers for the state of Texas and certified through the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. The Dallas County Fire Marshal’s Office provides a 24-hour operation to protect its citizens from all hazards by providing and coordinating resources, expertise, leadership and advocacy through a comprehensive program of prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery. It is the duty of the Dallas County Fire Marshal’s Office to provide for the health, safety, and welfare of the citizens of Dallas County, in accordance with Chapter 352 of the Texas Local Government Code, County policy, Dallas County Fire Code, and sound Emergency Management practices.
Also, the Dallas County Fire Marshal’s Office has the inspection and Fire & Life Safety prevention division. The division conducts random and annual Fire and Life Safety inspections in all Dallas County buildings and Detention Facilities which educates staff and visitors and helps prevent fire through Fire Inspections and Code Enforcement activities.
Responsibilities of the Dallas County
Fire Marshal’s Office
Responsibilities include:
- Respond to and investigate all fires in the County
- Retain a 24 hour on-call status for all fire investigations, Hazmat response, and major disasters
- Perform Foster Home / Licensed child care facility inspections in the following cities
- Grand Prairie
- Duncanville
- Cedar Hill
- Wilmer
- Hutchins
- Combine
- Seagoville
- Sunnyvale
- Inspect and Issue Burn Permits in the County
- Inspect and regulate firework stands
- Perform annual life-safety and fire-prevention inspections in all County Buildings and Detentions Facilities
- Assist in Law Enforcement activities as requested
- Administer fire suppression operations in the unincorporated areas in the County with assistance of the Dallas County Fire and Rescue Department
- Respond to other cities and surrounding counties for mutual aid in fire suppression and fire investigation operations
- Work closely in the North Texas Arson Task Force committee
- Members of the North Texas Joint Terrorism committee
- Respond to suspicious packages in the County Buildings
