Bailiffs provide daily security to the courts in four different locations, including auxiliary courtrooms for visiting judges. Bailiffs are generally responsible for security, the transportation of prisoners, the execution of warrants and serving of civil papers. Bailiff duties are conducted with full-time sheriff’s deputies, as well as a bailiff pool of part-time employees who can be assigned as needed to the courts. Bailiff tasks are performed for the Justice of the Peace courts which belong to the Constable Offices.
Applicants should have the following:

  • A high school diploma or GED
  • An active TCLEOSE (Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education) certification as a peace officer and one of the following combinations:
    • 30 college hours from an accredited college or university with a grade “C” or better and one year of law enforcement experience OR
    • 15 college hours from an accredited college or university with a grade “C” or better and two years of law enforcement experience OR
    • 3 years of law enforcement experience.

A candidate may be considered at a lower salary grade with a combination of TCLEOSE certification, education, and/or work experience that equates to two years. These minimum qualifications are required prior to the candidate taking the written entry level law enforcement examination.
