About the Medical Reserve Corps (MRC):

Two years after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, the U.S. Congress established the Medical Reserve Corps as one of the volunteer agencies within the United States Citizen Corps. The MRC functions under the auspices of the office of the U.S. Surgeon General. Locally, our mission is to improve community resiliency by recruiting and training volunteers to supplement local medical response to public health emergencies. Just as in a hospital, medical services must have a strong and capable support team comprised of non-medical personnel. Therefore, the MRC looks for both licensed medical and non-medical volunteers.

Dallas County MRC volunteers come from all walks of life. Some are physicians, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, mental health professionals, college students, interpreters, teachers/educators, amateur radio operators, retail clerks, house wives/husbands, accountants, lawyers, delivery drivers, realtors, administrators, or skilled and experienced in an array of other backgrounds.

As a local MRC volunteer you will be asked to train to help set up and operate temporary emergency clinics to dispense mass quantities of antibiotics, vaccinations, or other medications during a local public health emergency. You will also train to support emergency medical response to mass sheltering operations.

Following are the applicant criteria for membership in the Dallas County MRC:

  1. Be at least 21 years of age
  2. Provide social security number (SSN) and authorize a criminal background check
  3. Be honest, truthful, and of good character in dealing with others
